Two weeks after his successful start in the FIA Kart European Championship, Maxim Rehm travelled on to France last weekend. In Normandy, the youngster delivered a strong performance, but in the final he became the victim of a collision and retired involuntarily.
With a top ten result, Maxim Rehm from Germany started in the FIA Kart European Championship and now wanted to build on this in France. The second round took place on the 1,215-metre-long racetrack in Essay and Maxim was already very confident before the start: "After the test drives, I feel very comfortable, I like the track and think I have good chances."
But already with the start of the free practice sessions on Friday, an exciting weekend took its course. "I made a small mistake when I entered on to the track and received a penalty from the race management for it. My best time from qualifying will be cancelled," the 13-year-old explained.
But the setback inspired the youngster even more. In qualifying, he was one of the fastest and would have taken pole position without his penalty – so with sixth place, he still had a good starting position. In the following heats, Maxim continued to be in the lead field and finished all rounds in the top five. In ninth place, he was the only driver from Germany to make it to the final.
"We can be satisfied with the result, especially because we found out afterwards that I drove with a crooked chassis. For the finale we have fixed the problem and I will attack fully again," the driver from the Ricky Flynn Motorsport team continued to focus.
After a turbulent start, the young German fought great duels, but after four laps the involuntary end followed. "My opponent pushed me off the track during the overtaking maneuvre, I damaged my chain and could no longer continue. That was a pity, of course, but somehow suited the whole weekend. We were competitive again, but unfortunately there was no countable result", Maxim concluded.
Already next weekend it goes on for the German young talent. Then the second round of the German Junior Kart Championship takes place in Wackersdorf.
