Maxim Rehm is one of the best kart drivers in the world

Last weekend the time had come, the FIA Kart World Championship took place in Campillos, Spain, with 175 drivers from all over the world competing for the highest title in karting – with it, Maxim Rehm from Germany.

"We are well prepared. We were already at the start here a week ago and had a chance of winning, and now we want to follow up on that," said the 13-year-old racer before the start of the fight for the World Championship crown.

On the racetrack in the south of Spain, difficult conditions were waiting this time. On Saturday and Sunday, it rained partly and created new conditions on the more than 1,500-meter-long racetrack. The first exchange of blows took place in qualifying, but Maxim was anything but satisfied with 31st place: "Unfortunately, the prescribed standard tires have very big differences in performance. Two or three tenths of a second make up many positions at such a power density."

In the heats, Maxim then started an impressive race to catch up. Highly concentrated, he fought his way forward in his five heats, celebrated a victory and ended up in the top five every time. With this strong performance, he improved to tenth place for the starting grid for the grand final – making him the only German driver in the final.

"Now it depends. In the heats, I showed that we have the potential for the front ranks. But everything that happened so far, no longer counts. At the finale, the clocks are turned to zero, the following 16 laps decide on the World Championship title," the protégé from the English team Ricky Flynn Motorsport knew about his chance.

Shortly before the start of the finale, rain set in. Maxim, however, kept an overview and fought great duels with the international competition in the race. Being placed eleventh, he saw the checkered flag and thus missed the top ten only wafer-thin. "I received a time penalty afterwards and was therefore ranked 21st. Nevertheless, we can look back on a good weekend. A big thank you to my team, my family, my mechanic and everyone who supported me," Maxim concluded.

With the dropping of the checkered flag in Spain, Maxim also ended his career in the juniors. Already in a few weeks he advances to the seniors and still competes in the World Series Karting in Italy, as well as the SKUSA Super Nationals in Las Vegas.
