More than 220 drivers competed in the final of the WSK Euro Series in Sarno last weekend. German hope Maxim Rehm had planned a lot in the junior class again but in the end a starting accident in the decisive final cost him important points.
After a week's break, 13-year-old Maxim Rehm was back in the racing circus. In Sarno, just in front of the gates of Naples, the final of the WSK Euro Series took place. The international top racing series attracted pilots from more than 50 nations again. For Maxim, it was about ensuring a successful finish.
Already in the free practices, the youngster from the Team Ricky Flynn Motorsport counted to the top but in qualifying there was a small setback. "I was stuck in traffic and therefore did not make a perfect lap but with 18th place everything is still in it," the young talent from Germany remained optimistic.
In the following five heats, Maxim saw the checkered flag three times in third place and finished the other rounds in fourth and seventh place. With that he improved to ninth place in the intermediate rankings. "So far I can be very satisfied. The speed is right, I am competitive and will use it for the finals," said the young German driver on Saturday evening.
In the pre-final on Sunday morning, he continued his trend and finished as a strong second – his best result in the WSK Euro Series so far. "I am now going from row two into the final. If nothing happens at the start, anything is possible," Maxim was in a good mood. But as if he had already guessed it, there was an accident right after the start – one of the victims was Maxim. The race was interrupted after the collision and Maxim's team did everything they could to repair his kart. "I have to give a lot of praise to the whole team. My kart was worked on at full speed and it was on the grid ready to drive again," the young driver from Baden-Württemberg praised his crew.
Unfortunately, the effort remained unrewarded, the damage of the accident was too great, and Maxim had to head for the pits. "The frame was crooked, and a rim was broken so it was impossible to finish the race. This is a disappointing outcome of an otherwise very good weekend. Now I want to take the speed with me. In two weeks, we will be here for the European Championship as a guest", Maxim already looked ahead to the next challenge.
In the overall standings, he improved to sixth place after the good performances in the heats and the pre-final. Without the failure in the final, the jump to the winner's podium would have been realistic.
